REP BlackWing Adjustable Bench — Wide Pad review

The 14-inch wide-pad configuration of REP's flat/incline/decline bench, with twelve back positions, six seat positions, upright storage and a 1,000-lb manufacturer-stated rating. The wide seat tapers to 8.5 inches; the leg-roller attachment is sold separately.

A useful fit for

Consider this configuration when the documented 14-inch back and maximum seat-pad width are a deliberate preference, alongside REP's flat/incline/decline range, upright storage and 1,000-lb maker-stated rating. REP says the wide pad provides more shoulder support; that is a product-use description, not a promise of individual comfort or medical benefit.

The main tradeoff

REP says the wide pad does not meet the IPF width requirement, and the maker cautions that a wide pad may restrict full range of motion for some smaller lifters. The 131-lb base bench has no included leg restraint; its compatible leg-roller attachment is optional. The 10.7-square-foot floor footprint and vertical-storage clearance must be checked separately.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does the wide-pad BlackWing meet a 1,000-lb stated-rating threshold?

REP lists a 1,000-lb capacity for the BlackWing family, including the wide-pad option. This is the manufacturer's published rating, not an independent test, and the source does not settle every user's combined bodyweight-and-training-load interpretation.

Can the wide-pad BlackWing be stored vertically?

REP describes an integrated upright storage stand and lists a 3.1-square-foot vertically stored footprint. The 10.7-square-foot figure is the bench's floor footprint during use; neither number includes clearance, a lifting route or rack space.

Does this decline-capable bench include a leg restraint?

No leg restraint is listed as part of the wide-pad BlackWing bench package. REP describes the Leg Roller Attachment as optional and compatible, so buyers should verify it as a separate line item rather than assume that a negative back angle includes a way to secure the legs.

What changes with the wide-pad selection?

REP lists a 14-inch back pad and a seat pad that is 14 inches at its widest point before narrowing to 8.5 inches. It describes this configuration as a broader platform and says it is not within IPF width specifications. The finder can identify this AB-5350 configuration when a visitor explicitly selects the BlackWing Wide-pad option; this model-specific choice does not map pad dimensions across other benches.

The wide-pad BlackWing is best understood as a functional configuration of REP's current adjustable bench, not as a second frame with different angles. REP's product selector pairs each frame color with Standard or Wide, and the variant feed assigns the wide choice its own AB-5350 SKU family. The selection changes the pad shape; the principal frame, angle, capacity and storage figures remain those published for the BlackWing model. This review is based on those manufacturer sources, not a hands-on fit trial.

What the wider surface changes

REP lists a 14-inch-wide back pad and a seat pad that is 14 inches at its widest before tapering to 8.5 inches. That is wider than the standard version's 12.2-inch back and maximum seat width. REP presents the option for lifters seeking more shoulder support, people with shoulder restrictions, and those who want the raised side contact that can simulate a floor press. Those are the maker's use cases, not a medical recommendation or a promise that the surface will suit every person's shoulder position.

The tradeoff is equally direct in REP's FAQ: the wide pad does not fall within the IPF bench-width specification. The maker also cautions that the added breadth may limit full range of motion for some smaller lifters. If competition dimensions or an unrestricted arm path are essential, the Standard configuration is the safer one to examine first. If shoulder contact and a broad support surface are the priority, compare the actual 14-inch pad with your normal pressing position rather than relying on a lifestyle photo.

The frame still provides the BlackWing range

REP lists twelve back positions, starting at -8° and ending at 85°, and six seat positions from -10° to 45°. The manufacturer describes the model as flat, incline and decline capable, with a sliding ZeroGap seat that can close the pad gap across positions. The wide selection does not add a new movement or adjustment: its distinction from AB-5300 Standard is the contact width. REP's dimensions give the same 59.5-inch length, 25.8-inch overall width, 17.2-inch flat height, 10.7-square-foot floor footprint, 131-lb bench weight and 3.1-square-foot upright-storage footprint for the BlackWing frame.

That separation is helpful when you compare offers. The wider pad does not make the overall listed footprint wider than REP reports for the frame, though you still need enough lateral room to move and train. The 131-lb weight matters for the storage transition, and the 3.1-square-foot stored footprint leaves out the space needed to tip the bench upright or carry it through a doorway. Treat storage as a room-and-handling plan, not merely a number.

Decline position is not an included leg hold

The back angle includes a negative setting, but REP describes the Leg Roller Attachment as optional and compatible. The base wide-pad SKU should not be treated as a package with that restraint. A required “leg hold included” condition is therefore not met unless the exact offer includes the accessory, and any bundle needs its own compatibility check. The manufacturer sources reviewed for this assessment do not establish whether the roller can remain installed while the bench stands vertically, so confirm that point before planning both functions together.

REP lists an integrated stand for vertical storage and highlights a knurled stainless-steel handle for maneuverability. Its published BlackWing specifications do not list transport wheels, so this assessment does not count wheels as a feature. With a 131-lb bench, think through who will reposition it, how it will be moved, and whether the stored location is practical. The bench's size and function may suit a dedicated room better than a space where equipment must be moved after every set.

Capacity and materials are not independent test results

The page lists a 1,000-lb weight capacity, 11-gauge steel frame, CleanGrip pads and knurled stainless-steel handles. These describe REP's specifications. They are not evidence that this review performed load, fatigue, comfort or stability tests. No rating protocol or universal user-plus-load interpretation is supplied in the sources examined here, so check the current manual and ask the manufacturer how its rating applies to your intended lifts and the exact bench arrangement.

Standard versus Wide: a short decision

Choose the Wide configuration only when that extra surface is itself part of the plan. Its 14-inch back pad and broader upper seat are the reasons to pay attention; the Standard version has the same listed angle sequence and basic frame dimensions and is the manufacturer's width-compliant choice for its cited IPF dimensions. The wide model does not remove the need to check body fit, range of motion, rack placement or the optional restraint. For a comparison with the Standard-pad configuration, see the separate AB-5300 Standard assessment.

Who should shortlist this version

The wide-pad BlackWing suits a research shortlist for someone who deliberately wants a broad contact surface plus the BlackWing's long adjustment range and upright-storage design. Pass over it if you require the bench to fit IPF width, already know that a 14-inch pad restricts your movement, need a leg restraint included, or cannot accommodate the bench's weight and room footprint. REP offers seven finish choices; Metallic Black is used for the image reference here, while the review covers the Wide-pad SKU family across those finishes. REP's variant feed assigns one shared Metallic Black product thumbnail to both Standard and Wide selections; that photo is a model/finish reference and does not independently show the pad width. Verify the AB-5350 prefix, Wide selection, exact finish, package contents, dimensions and current instructions before buying.
